Beijing — In a significant move to bolster regional stability and economic integration, Chinese President Xi Jinping held high-level talks with Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon in Beijing this Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
The meeting culminated in the signing of the China-Tajikistan Treaty on Permanent Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation. President Xi emphasized that the treaty serves as a testament to the strong political mutual trust between the two nations, providing a solid guarantee for an enduring friendship regardless of changes in the external global environment.
Driving Innovation and Economic Growth
A primary focus of the discussions was the advancement of high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. President Xi called for the thorough alignment of development strategies to achieve mutual growth. Key areas for expanded cooperation include the digital economy, smart cities, artificial intelligence (AI), and green energy.
President Rahmon echoed these sentiments, highlighting the "fruitful results" already achieved in trade, investment, transportation, and agriculture. He expressed Tajikistan's eagerness to further collaborate on sci-tech innovation and the development of critical minerals.
Commitment to Regional Security
Security remains a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship. Both leaders pledged to enhance law enforcement cooperation and take decisive action against the "three evil forces"—terrorism, extremism, and separatism—to ensure long-term regional stability.
Furthermore, China expressed its welcome for Tajikistan to join the International Organization for Mediation and reiterated its commitment to strengthening cooperation within the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the China-Central Asia mechanism.
Global Governance and Diplomatic Alignment
During the talks, President Rahmon reaffirmed Tajikistan's firm adherence to the one-China principle, stating that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. He also praised the Global Governance Initiative and China's efforts in promoting political settlements for international hotspot issues, particularly in the Middle East.
The visit concluded with the signing of over 20 cooperation documents. These agreements span a wide array of sectors, including party-to-party exchanges, green mining, media, culture, education, and market supervision, signaling a new era of comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
