As the global health community prepares for the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA), the Chinese Foreign Ministry has clarified the position regarding the participation of the Taiwan region in the upcoming event.
On Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that the Taiwan region has no basis, reason, or right to participate in the assembly, which is scheduled to open on May 18. According to Guo, such participation is only possible if approval is granted by the central government.
The decision not to approve the Taiwan region's participation this year is aimed at upholding the one-China principle. Furthermore, China emphasizes the importance of maintaining the sanctity and authority of the relevant United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and WHA resolutions.
This stance underscores the ongoing commitment to international protocols and established resolutions governing global health governance and diplomatic representation. For business professionals and diplomatic observers monitoring cross-strait ties and international relations, these developments highlight the continued priority placed on the one-China principle within multilateral frameworks.
