China Boosts Technological Future: Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang Calls for Innovation Surge

In a series of strategic visits across the Chinese mainland, Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang has emphasized the critical need to elevate the nation's basic research capabilities and original innovation. During recent inspection tours in Fujian Province, Shanghai, and Beijing, Ding highlighted that the synergy between scientific discovery and technological invention is key to maintaining a competitive edge in the global landscape.

Strengthening the Scientific Foundation

Visiting the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Huairou Laboratory, Ding focused on the importance of optimizing the layout of basic research. He urged a strategic focus on priority areas and the pursuit of disruptive innovation, ensuring that fundamental science provides a robust foundation for breakthrough technologies.

The Vice Premier also inspected the High Energy Photon Source facility, where he underscored the necessity of expanding major national scientific infrastructure. Such facilities are seen as essential catalysts for accelerating breakthroughs in basic research and providing the necessary support for advanced scientific inquiry.

Integrating Talent and Industry

Education and talent cultivation remain central to this vision. While visiting Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ding called for a more integrated approach to education, science, and technology. By aligning these sectors, the goal is to foster a pipeline of talent capable of driving long-term innovation.

The importance of historical legacy was also highlighted at the CAS memorial of the "two bombs, one satellite." Ding encouraged today's researchers to draw inspiration from the pioneering spirit of those who developed China's first atomic bomb, intercontinental ballistic missile, and satellite, urging them to shoulder the nation's scientific mission.

Bridging the Gap Between Lab and Market

Recognizing the role of the private sector, Ding visited leading industry giants, including Contemporary Amperex Technology and Huawei's Lianqiu Lake R&D Center. He praised their contributions to basic research and advocated for a closer integration of research, application development, and commercialization. This bridge between the laboratory and the marketplace is viewed as vital for translating theoretical breakthroughs into real-world technological leadership.
