Milestone for Nature: Crested Ibis Population in Zhejiang Surpasses 1,000

In a significant victory for wildlife conservation, the population of the crested ibis in Zhejiang Province has officially surpassed the 1,000 mark. This milestone was reached following the hatching of the 29th chick of the year this past Wednesday at a dedicated breeding center in Deqing County, Huzhou.

Known as the "Jewel of the East," the crested ibis is a rare and endangered species that has become a symbol of environmental recovery. The journey toward this achievement began in 2008, when ten birds were relocated from Shaanxi to Deqing County. Since then, local efforts have focused on a comprehensive strategy of breeding, relocating, and reintroducing the species into the wild.

Current data reflects a successful balance between managed care and natural survival. Of the total population, 531 birds are now living in the wild, while 469 remain under human care. This growth is a clear indicator of the species' remarkable recovery and the effectiveness of the habitat restoration projects in the region.

For global environmental enthusiasts and researchers, the resurgence of the crested ibis serves as an inspiring example of how targeted conservation initiatives can pull a species back from the brink of extinction, contributing to the broader biodiversity of the Chinese mainland.
