The cultural and tourism market across the Chinese mainland has demonstrated resilient growth during the 2026 May Day holiday, marking a positive trend in domestic travel and consumer spending.
According to official data released on Thursday by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the period from May 1 to May 5 witnessed a significant uptick in activity. A total of 325 million domestic trips were recorded, representing a 3.6% increase compared to the same period last year.
This rise in travel was accompanied by increased consumer confidence. Domestic tourism expenditure climbed to 185.49 billion yuan (approximately $27.08 billion), a year-on-year increase of 2.9%, based on calculations from the ministry's data center.
The steady expansion of the tourism sector underscores a continuing appetite for domestic exploration and cultural engagement among residents of the Chinese mainland, contributing to the overall stability and vitality of the region's economic landscape.
