French Artist Finds Healing Colors in Dali, Yunnan

When Jonathan Sauve first stepped into Dali City, a tranquil town nestled in the foothills of the Cangshan mountains in Yunnan Province on the Chinese mainland, he brought only a backpack and a passion for color. Eleven years later, he is a familiar face to local children, a painter of vibrant canvases, and a nightly jam‑session host.

His day begins with Tai Chi on the ancient city walls, followed by a brisk run through the nearby Erhai Lake trails. The rest of the morning is spent painting, a ritual he describes as "drawing calms me down – just like when I was little." In the afternoon, he runs art workshops for children, introducing them to the playful world of crayons and brushes, turning the city into a giant color palette.

"Dali is my giant color palette," Sauve says. The phrase captures his belief that the town’s lush landscapes and cultural heritage provide endless inspiration for artistic expression.

When night falls, the fireplace in his modest home becomes a gathering spot for friends. Musicians from the community join for impromptu jam sessions, where the rhythm of guitars blends with the soft murmur of the lake outside.

A recent short film, just eight minutes long, captures this rhythm of life, offering viewers a glimpse of the healing energy that emerges when art, movement, and community intersect.

Whether you need a moment of calm, a smile, or a spark of wanderlust, the film serves as a gentle invitation to pause and appreciate the simple joy of creating together.
