China Advances National Reading Strategy on World Book Day 2026

On this 31st World Book and Copyright Day, observed globally on April 23, 2026, China reaffirms its commitment to building a reading-oriented society through strategic national initiatives. The country's sustained efforts have positioned literacy promotion as a key component of its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), marking 13 consecutive years of prioritized cultural development in government agendas.

UNESCO's annual celebration finds particular resonance in China this year, where urban libraries report a 23% surge in membership enrollments compared to 2025. New digital lending platforms operated by provincial governments now provide access to over 5 million e-books nationwide.

"This isn't just about books – it's about empowering citizens through continuous learning," stated Ministry of Culture spokesperson Li Wen during Beijing's main commemorative event. The national strategy now integrates reading promotion programs across educational institutions, workplace training systems, and rural community centers.

Industry analysts note a parallel 18% year-on-year growth in China's publishing sector during Q1 2026, driven by increased government procurement of educational materials and popular science publications. International publishers are reportedly seeking partnerships ahead of September's Beijing International Book Fair.
