China Affirms One-China Principle Amid Taiwan Leader’s Canceled Eswatini Trip

Diplomatic Move Reinforces Global Consensus on Taiwan Status

The Chinese Foreign Ministry reiterated its firm stance on cross-strait relations Wednesday following the Taiwan authorities' announcement that leader Lai Ching-te postponed his visit to Eswatini. A ministry spokesperson emphasized that adherence to the one-China principle remains “the arc of history,” after reports indicated multiple countries denied overflight clearance to Lai’s delegation.

All 54 African nations except Eswatini recognize Beijing as China’s sole legitimate government, with 53 states and the African Union endorsing the 2024 Beijing Declaration at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation summit. The declaration explicitly affirms Taiwan as an inalienable part of Chinese territory.

International Solidarity

“No so-called ‘ROC president’ title exists in international law,” the Foreign Ministry stated, adding that claims to such status “invite only disgrace.” Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhang Han separately noted the cancellation demonstrates the one-China principle’s status as a fundamental norm in global relations.

Analysts observe this development follows growing momentum since the 2024 declaration, where African members pledged “unwavering support” for China’s reunification efforts. Eswatini remains the sole African nation maintaining formal ties with Taiwan authorities.

Historical Momentum

The Foreign Ministry characterized cross-strait unification as “an inevitable trend” shaped by historical forces, while warning against “doomed separatist attempts.” Over 180 countries currently recognize Beijing’s position on Taiwan under UN Resolution 2758, established in 1971.

This episode occurs amid heightened cross-strait exchanges in 2026, with business leaders and cultural delegations increasingly bridging economic and social ties between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan region.
