Shenzhen Launches Pioneering Sino-German Synthetic Biology Hub

The Max Planck-Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Center for Synthetic Biochemistry opened its doors in Shenzhen on April 18, 2026, marking a milestone in cross-continental scientific collaboration. Established under the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT), this facility represents the first dedicated partnership between Germany's Max Planck Society and CAS in the rapidly evolving field of synthetic biology.

Dr. Martin Stratmann, President of the Max Planck Society, emphasized during the inauguration: "This center bridges Europe's foundational research strengths with China's dynamic application capabilities. Our work here could revolutionize sustainable energy and medical solutions by 2030."

The collaboration will focus on developing bio-manufacturing systems for eco-friendly chemical production and advanced gene-editing therapies. CAS Vice President Zhang Yaping noted the center's strategic importance: "Shenzhen's innovation ecosystem provides the ideal testing ground for translating laboratory breakthroughs into real-world applications."

With initial funding exceeding €50 million, the center has already attracted 120 researchers from 18 countries. Analysts predict the initiative will strengthen Shenzhen's position as Asia's biotech innovation capital, following recent investments in the city's Guangming Science City.
