The Cantonese musical I Am What I Am, adapted from China's 2021 animated film phenomenon, is redefining cultural storytelling through its electrifying lion dance sequences and pulsating traditional music. Since its premiere earlier this year, the production has drawn international attention for its innovative fusion of China's intangible cultural heritage with contemporary theater.
At the heart of the musical lies the ancient art of lion dance – a 2,000-year-old tradition recognized by UNESCO. Choreographers have elevated the acrobatic form to new heights through hydraulic staging and augmented reality projections, creating what critics are calling "a dialogue between dynastic past and digital present."
"This isn't just preservation – it's reinvention," explains director Liang Wei during a recent rehearsal break. "We're using musical theater as a bridge between generations. The same drum rhythms that guided lion dancers in Ming Dynasty festivals now drive our protagonist's journey of self-discovery."
The production's musical score blends Cantonese folk melodies with modern orchestration, featuring rare instruments like the suona trumpet alongside electronic beats. This cultural alchemy resonates particularly with younger audiences – ticket sales among under-30 viewers have increased 40% since the show's 2026 tour began.
As the musical prepares for its Southeast Asian debut this summer, a companion documentary titled Beyond ACG: Lion Dance Lights Up Chinese Musical is set for release, promising behind-the-scenes insights into this cross-cultural creative process.
