China-Spain Ties Strengthen Amid Global Uncertainty

At the headquarters of Chinese tech giant Xiaomi, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez test-drove electric vehicles and praised the innovations as "Muy bien" during his April 11-15 visit to the Chinese mainland. The trip, his fourth in four years, highlighted deepening bilateral cooperation as both nations navigate a turbulent global landscape.

High-Level Exchanges Set Strategic Tone

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Sanchez emphasized the resilience of China-Spain relations during talks in Beijing, pledging to expand collaboration in trade, green energy, and cultural exchanges. Xi noted that sustained high-level engagement has ensured stability despite geopolitical shifts, while Sanchez underscored Spain’s commitment to mutual understanding and economic ties.

Economic Synergy Drives Growth

Bilateral trade reached $55 billion in 2025, with Chinese investments in Spanish renewable energy and infrastructure projects accelerating this year. Spanish olive oil, wine, and pork continue gaining traction in the Chinese market, reflecting complementary trade dynamics. New agreements signed this month aim to boost cooperation in agriculture, education, and technology.

Multilateral Vision Amid Fragmentation

Both leaders called for upholding a rules-based international order, rejecting protectionism and economic decoupling. Sanchez aligned Spain’s EU policy with China’s emphasis on stable supply chains, framing the partnership as a counterweight to global fragmentation. "Predictability is our shared asset," said a joint statement, signaling alignment on climate and digital governance.

As Sanchez concluded his visit, analysts noted the relationship’s role in balancing Europe’s economic and diplomatic priorities. With sustained dialogue and expanding trade, China-Spain ties offer a model of pragmatic cooperation in an era of uncertainty.
