China and Spain Strengthen Economic Ties Through Enhanced Investment, Trade

Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation during high-level talks in Beijing on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The discussions focused on expanding trade, boosting green energy collaboration, and stabilizing supply chains amid global economic uncertainties.

Premier Li emphasized China's commitment to importing more Spanish agricultural and industrial goods while encouraging Chinese enterprises to invest in Spain's renewable energy and technology sectors. "The more volatile the international landscape becomes, the more our nations must empower each other through practical cooperation," Li stated, highlighting plans to enhance the China-Europe Railway Express and establish a green shipping corridor.

Sanchez welcomed the economic alignment, noting Spain's readiness to increase collaboration in education, tourism, and joint R&D projects. Both leaders witnessed the signing of 14 cooperation documents spanning agriculture, digital innovation, and clean energy storage solutions.

The meeting comes as China seeks to strengthen ties with key EU members, with Spain positioned as a strategic partner in southern Europe. Recent data shows bilateral trade reached $52 billion in 2025, with electric vehicle components and olive oil driving growth.
