China Warns US Blockade of Iran Ports Risks Regional Escalation

China has cautioned that recent US military actions to block the Strait of Hormuz could destabilize a temporary ceasefire and heighten tensions in the region. The remarks were made by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun during a press briefing on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, following reports of the US-led maritime blockade.

Guo emphasized that the US decision to deploy additional forces and enforce targeted restrictions on shipping contradicts ongoing diplomatic efforts. "At a time when relevant parties have already reached a temporary ceasefire arrangement, such actions escalate contradictions and undermine fragile progress," he stated. The spokesperson warned that the blockade jeopardizes navigation safety in the strategic waterway, calling it "dangerous and irresponsible."

The US Navy began enforcing the blockade on Monday, April 13, after former President Donald Trump announced the move on Truth Social. The decision followed unsuccessful peace talks between the US and Iran.

China has urged all parties to prioritize dialogue, adhere to existing ceasefire agreements, and take concrete steps to restore normal transit through the strait. "Only a comprehensive ceasefire can create conditions for lasting stability," Guo added, highlighting Beijing\u2019s call for multilateral de-escalation.
