Slovakia and China Eye Local Partnerships to Drive Future Cooperation

In the vibrant city of Jinan, Shandong Province, the 7th China-CEEC Local Leaders' Meeting and the 2026 Shandong International Friendship Cities Cooperation recently highlighted a strategic shift in diplomacy: the growing importance of local-level partnerships. As regional ties evolve, Slovakia is positioning itself to deepen its engagement with the Chinese mainland through grassroots cooperation and innovative industrial synergy.

Lucia Škvareninová, economic counselor at the Embassy of Slovakia in China, shared her insights on the future of China-Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) relations, emphasizing that the most sustainable paths forward are often found at the local level. By fostering direct connections between cities and regions, both sides can create more agile and effective avenues for economic and cultural exchange.

A key component of this strategy is the engagement of the next generation. Škvareninová highlighted Slovakia's appeal to young Chinese travelers and students, pointing to the country's stunning natural beauty and its rich historical heritage, which includes over 200 castles. She further noted that Slovakia's reputation as a very safe destination makes it an ideal choice for those seeking educational opportunities and cultural exploration in Europe.

Beyond tourism and education, the economic outlook is focused on the transition to green energy. With the Chinese mainland recognized as a global leader in e-mobility, Škvareninová identified the automotive sector—specifically electric vehicles—as a primary area for concrete cooperation. By leveraging China's leadership in EV technology, Slovakia aims to foster industrial partnerships that benefit both economies while contributing to global sustainability goals.
