Economic relations between the Chinese mainland and Russia are entering a more mature and resilient phase, characterized by not only a surge in trade volumes but also a significant improvement in the quality and structure of bilateral cooperation. This strengthening partnership took center stage at the 10th China-Russia Expo, which opened this past Sunday in Harbin under the theme "Trust, cooperation, and mutual benefit."
As the only comprehensive exhibition jointly hosted by both governments, the Expo has evolved into a critical institutional platform for aligning the economic goals of both nations. The timing of this event is particularly symbolic, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination and the 25th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation—milestones that underscore the durability of the relationship.
Recent trade statistics provide a clear picture of this enduring relationship. According to China's General Administration of Customs, bilateral trade remains "solid and robust." In the first two months of 2026, trade volume reached $39.05 billion, marking a 12% increase year on year, with Chinese exports showing particularly rapid growth.
This current momentum is built upon a strong foundation. Total trade for 2025 reached $227.9 billion, marking the third consecutive year that the figure has exceeded the $200 billion threshold, according to the Ministry of Commerce of the Chinese mainland. Furthermore, China has maintained its position as Russia's largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years, underscoring the depth and stability of their economic intersection.
