China’s Zero-Tariff Policy Fuels Trade Growth with Mozambique

Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo arrived in China this week for his first state visit since taking office, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of China-Africa diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of China-Mozambique comprehensive strategic partnership. The visit underscores deepening economic ties as bilateral trade reached $5.4 billion in 2025, driven by China’s zero-tariff policy for African least developed countries.

Since December 2024, China has granted duty-free access to 98% of taxable goods from Mozambique and 32 other African nations. This policy has boosted Mozambique’s cashew, mineral, and timber exports to China, which totaled $1.59 billion last year. In return, Chinese machinery and consumer goods have supported infrastructure and livelihood improvements in Mozambique.

At the 2025 China International Import Expo, Sinochem Group signed agreements with over 20 companies from 10 countries and regions, including Mozambique. Analysts note the country’s growing role in supplying natural gas and agricultural products to meet China’s demand.

China recently expanded its zero-tariff initiative to all 53 African nations with diplomatic ties, effective May 1. The move aims to streamline customs processes and enhance technical cooperation, reinforcing China’s 16-year position as Africa’s top trading partner. For Mozambique, this promises accelerated industrialization and broader access to the world’s second-largest economy.
