The Huangmao Sea Channel Bridge, a monumental addition to the transportation network of south China’s Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), officially opens to traffic today at 3 p.m. local time (7 a.m. GMT), following four and a half years of construction.
Spanning 31 kilometers, this engineering marvel connects Zhuhai City and Jiangmen City in Guangdong Province. As a two-way, six-lane highway designed for speeds up to 100 kilometers per hour, the bridge significantly reduces travel time between the two cities from over an hour to approximately 30 minutes.
The Huangmao Sea Channel Bridge is the latest mega cross-sea project in the region, following the renowned Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Channel. With the completion of all electromechanical installations, local authorities anticipate that the bridge will greatly enhance regional connectivity.
Construction of the bridge commenced on June 6, 2020. Over the years, the project has been a testament to China’s commitment to infrastructure development and technological advancement.
This new artery is expected to foster economic integration within the GBA, a dynamic megalopolis comprising the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao, along with nine cities in Guangdong Province. The enhanced connectivity aims to facilitate the flow of goods, services, and talent across the region.
The Greater Bay Area is central to China’s strategy of reform and opening up. With ambitions to build it into a model of high-quality development and a world-class city cluster, projects like the Huangmao Sea Channel Bridge play a critical role in realizing this vision.
