At a recent United Nations Security Council meeting, Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, called on the United States to support peace efforts in Ukraine rather than obstruct them. He emphasized the urgency of de-escalating the situation and pursuing a political resolution to the ongoing crisis.
Geng highlighted that continuous arms transfers and military support to Kyiv, particularly by the U.S., are exacerbating tensions and hindering the path to peace. “The immediate priority is to prevent further escalation, avoid provoking any party, and work towards a swift de-escalation,” he stated.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu, also expressed concerns during the meeting about the influx of heavy conventional weapons into the conflict zone and the use of cluster munitions, noting their indiscriminate impact and long-term consequences.
China urges all involved parties to demonstrate political will and engage in peace talks at the earliest opportunity. Geng reaffirmed China’s consistent stance on the Ukraine crisis, advocating for a ceasefire and the resolution of disputes through diplomatic negotiations. “From the very beginning, China has been active in promoting a political solution,” he remarked.
Responding to accusations from Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood, regarding China’s alleged support for Russia, Geng denied any provision of weapons to any party in the conflict. He asserted that China strictly controls dual-use items and that Chinese companies conduct regular trade with countries worldwide in compliance with World Trade Organization rules.
“China opposes the use of the Ukraine issue by the United States to discredit and pressure China,” Geng stated, criticizing unilateral sanctions and what he termed illegal “long-arm jurisdiction” imposed on Chinese entities and individuals. He warned that actions such as “selling fear, creating enemies, and inciting confrontation” would ultimately harm the United States itself.
Geng called on the international community to create favorable conditions for peace talks and provide constructive assistance. “Who is truly supporting peace, and who is obstructing it? I believe the international community sees this very clearly,” he concluded.
