In response to an unprecedented heatwave sweeping across Western Europe, dozens of homeless individuals gathered in Paris on Wednesday, May 27, to demand expanded access to shelters and emergency housing.
The demonstration, led by the association Utopia 56 Paris, sought to draw immediate attention to the life-threatening conditions faced by the city's most vulnerable populations during extreme temperature spikes.
Nathan Lequeux, a coordinator at Utopia 56, challenged the misconception that warmer weather eases the hardships of living on the street. "It seems like, since the weather's nice, it's pleasant to live outside. No! As many people die on the streets in summer as in winter," Lequeux stated, emphasizing that heat can be just as lethal as freezing temperatures.
Utopia 56 is widely recognized for its advocacy for the rights of migrants and vulnerable groups. Through this gathering, the organization aimed to pressure regional administrative authorities in Paris—the bodies responsible for shelter provision—to act urgently to protect those without homes during this period of extreme weather.
