Sudanese Political and Armed Groups Convene in Nairobi for Peace Talks

In a significant push toward stability, a broad coalition of Sudanese political parties, civil society organizations, and armed movements gathered in Nairobi on Friday, May 22, 2026. The meeting aims to carve out a viable path toward ending the protracted conflict and restoring long-term peace to Sudan.

The session, organized under the "Sudanese Declaration of Principles Forces for Building a New Homeland," brought together a diverse array of influential leaders. Notable attendees included Abdalla Hamdok, chairman of the Sumoud Alliance; Abdelwahid Mohamed al-Nur, leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army; Omar al-Digair, chairman of the Sudanese Congress Party; and Al-Wathiq al-Barir, Secretary-General of the National Umma Party.

Also participating in the dialogue were Yasir Arman of the SPLM-N Revolutionary Democratic Current, Babiker Faisal of the Federal Gathering, Kamal Boulad of the Ba'ath Party-National, and Taha Osman, representing the Professionals and Unions Coordination.

According to Mohamed Abdelrahman, spokesperson for the Sudan Liberation Army, the discussions are centered on three primary objectives: analyzing the current political climate in Sudan, addressing the persistence of the conflict, and further refining the coalition's existing declaration.

This gathering builds upon the Declaration of Principles signed in Nairobi in mid-December 2025. That foundational document explicitly stated that "there is no military solution in Sudan" and urged international pressure on the Sudanese Armed Forces, the Rapid Support Forces, and their respective allies to adhere to the roadmap proposed by the Quad mechanism countries in September 2025.

Throughout the meeting, participants emphasized the critical need for enhanced dialogue and joint action among Sudanese political forces. The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to a comprehensive political solution—one that not only ceases hostilities but also fulfills the Sudanese people's aspirations for a future defined by democracy, stability, and peace.
