Russia has reached a significant milestone in its strategic nuclear capabilities with the successful test-launch of the new Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) this past Tuesday.
According to the TASS news agency, the Sarmat system is designed for strategic deterrence, boasting a formidable range of over 35,000 kilometers. Sergei Karakayev, Commander of Russia's Strategic Missile Forces, highlighted that the missile's warhead yield is more than four times greater than any Western equivalent, marking a substantial increase in strike power.
The strategic importance of the Sarmat ICBM lies in its ability to bypass current and future missile defense networks. By ensuring reliable strikes on assigned targets, the system is expected to significantly enhance Russia's overall combat readiness and deterrent posture.
Looking ahead to the remainder of 2026, the first missile regiment equipped with the Sarmat system is scheduled to enter combat duty with the Uzhur Missile Division before the year concludes.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, who received the report on the successful launch, emphasized that this development represents a critical step in the evolution of the nation's strategic nuclear forces. President Putin stressed that the deployment of the Sarmat missile is a necessary measure to effectively counter external threats and maintain national security.
