Violence Surges in Eastern DRC: Suspected ADF Attacks Leave Dozens Dead

The eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has once again been plunged into turmoil following a series of brutal attacks attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). On Thursday, a violent assault on the town of Biakato in the Mambasa territory of Ituri Province left at least 12 people dead and several others missing.

The attack sparked widespread panic among the local population, forcing hundreds of residents, including women and children, to flee their homes in search of safety. Local sources indicate that search efforts are currently ongoing to locate those still missing in the aftermath of the violence.

Gilbert Sivamwenda, a member of the Ituri Provincial Assembly, described the current security situation in the region as "worrying." He highlighted that the province is frequently targeted by various armed groups, creating a persistent cycle of instability for the local communities.

This latest tragedy follows closely on the heels of another incident. Less than 48 hours prior to the Biakato assault, an attack occurred in Beni, North Kivu Province, where approximately 20 civilians were reportedly killed by the same rebel group. These rapid-fire incidents underscore the severe and ongoing threat posed by the ADF.

The ADF, a Ugandan rebel faction affiliated with the Islamic State in Central Africa, has long operated within the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. While joint military operations between Congolese and Ugandan forces have been active since November 2021 to counter the group's influence, the ADF continues to threaten the lives and security of civilians across the region.
