Bulgaria’s New Leadership Faces Test Over US Military at Sofia Airport

A New Chapter for Bulgaria

Bulgaria is entering a period of significant political transition. Following recent elections, Rumen Radev, a former president, has secured an absolute majority, paving the way for his tenure as Prime Minister-elect. Having campaigned on a platform of substantial policy change, Radev now finds himself at the center of a complex geopolitical debate.

The Sofia Airport Controversy

One of the most pressing issues facing the new leadership is the presence of US military aircraft at Sofia Airport. Specifically, the stationing of a large number of US air refuelling tanker planes at the capital's civilian airport has sparked intense public debate and international scrutiny.

The situation has been further complicated by inconsistent communication from government officials. Milen Keremedchiev, former Deputy Foreign Minister of Bulgaria, highlighted the confusion surrounding the aircraft's presence.

"At the beginning, the Ministry of Defense said they are based on military training which is to be performed at the eastern front of NATO," Keremedchiev noted. "But on another day that's not correct information, because for the first time we had so many planes actually landing at civilian airport."

Testing the New Mandate

As Rumen Radev prepares to lead, the resolution of this military presence will serve as an early litmus test for his administration. The balance between maintaining strategic alliances and addressing domestic concerns over the use of civilian infrastructure remains a critical challenge for the incoming Prime Minister.
