A suspect has been formally charged with attempting to assassinate US President Donald Trump following a dramatic shooting incident this past weekend at the annual White House Correspondents' Association Dinner.
Cole Tomas Allen, 31, appeared in the US District Court for the District of Columbia on Monday, facing three criminal counts: attempting to assassinate the president, interstate transportation of weapons, and discharge of a firearm during a violent crime. The charges stem from an attack that unfolded on Saturday night, sending shockwaves through the political establishment.
According to court documents and law enforcement reports, Allen traveled by train from California to Washington, D.C., checking into the Washington Hilton hotel with an arsenal of weapons. Authorities reported seizing a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, a Rock Island Armory 1911 .38 semi-automatic handgun, three knives, and other dangerous paraphernalia upon his arrest.
In a chilling email sent to relatives shortly before the incident, Allen reportedly outlined his intentions, writing that Trump administration officials were "targets, prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest." He also noted, "I walk in with multiple weapons and not a single person there considers the possibility that I could be a threat."
Live footage from the gala event captured the moment Allen attempted to rush a security checkpoint, exchanging gunfire with law enforcement. A US Secret Service officer was injured in the confrontation. President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and all attending Cabinet members were swiftly evacuated. Attendees were seen on live broadcast ducking for cover under tables.
"The agency is investigating a shooting incident near the main magnetometer screening area," US Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi stated on social media platform X immediately after the event, noting coordination with the Metropolitan Police Department.
This latest incident underscores a troubling pattern of political violence in the United States in recent years. President Trump himself has been the target of multiple assassination attempts and threats both during his 2024 campaign and his presidency. The most notable prior incident occurred in July 2024 in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he narrowly survived an attack while campaigning.
The case against Allen now proceeds through the federal justice system, marking a significant security event that will likely prompt renewed discussions about protective measures for public figures.
