Lebanon Pushes for Ceasefire Extension in US-Brokered Talks

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun confirmed this week that Beirut will prioritize extending its fragile ceasefire with Israel during high-stakes negotiations mediated by the United States. The talks come amid renewed violence, with Israeli drone strikes killing one person and injuring two others in Western Bekaa overnight Tuesday.

Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Mouawad will lead Lebanon's delegation at Thursday's Washington meeting, where officials aim to build on the tenuous truce that took effect April 16. President Aoun emphasized there would be "no concessions" undermining Lebanese sovereignty, while maintaining that dialogue remains "the viable path forward" to prevent further destruction.

The negotiations face significant hurdles as positions harden. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar accused Hezbollah of creating a "terrorist state" within Lebanon during separate remarks Wednesday, while Lebanese officials continue demanding immediate humanitarian relief for southern communities facing ongoing home demolitions.

This week's meetings follow April 14 discussions where Israel pressed for Hezbollah's disarmament against Lebanon's calls for permanent de-escalation. With the current ceasefire set to expire imminently, observers warn renewed conflict could destabilize regional security frameworks established after the 2025 ASEAN-Mediterranean Dialogue.
