UN Chief Condemns Attack on French Peacekeeper in Southern Lebanon

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned an attack in southern Lebanon that killed a French peacekeeper and injured three others on April 19, 2026. The incident occurred during an investigation of suspected improvised explosive devices near UN positions, with initial assessments attributing the fire to non-state actors, presumed to be Hezbollah.

Guterres emphasized that attacks on peacekeepers violate international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006), stating, "They are grave violations… and may amount to war crimes." He urged accountability through prompt investigations and prosecutions, while reiterating calls for all parties to respect the 10-day cessation of hostilities announced on April 16.

This marks the third fatal incident involving UNIFIL personnel in recent weeks, raising concerns over escalating tensions despite the ongoing truce. The UN chief extended condolences to France and the fallen peacekeeper’s family, underscoring the need to safeguard UN personnel and assets.
