The Israeli military announced on April 19, 2026, that it killed senior Hezbollah commander Ali Rida Abbas and over 150 members of the group during pre-ceasefire strikes in southern Lebanon. The operation occurred in the 24 hours before a US-mediated truce took effect at midnight between April 16 and 17 local time.
Abbas, described as a key figure in Hezbollah's armed wing, was the fourth commander linked to the Bint Jbeil area killed by Israeli forces since October 2023. The military emphasized Bint Jbeil's role as a strategic base for cross-border attacks. While Hezbollah has not confirmed Abbas’s death, Israeli officials stated he survived previous strikes targeting the group’s leadership in early 2024.
Despite the ceasefire, tensions persist. An Israeli reservist was killed and nine soldiers wounded on April 18 when a military bulldozer struck a Hezbollah-planted explosive device in southern Lebanon. This marks the second Israeli fatality since the truce began. Since clashes erupted in early March 2026 amid regional instability linked to the Iran conflict, 15 Israeli soldiers and approximately 1,800 Hezbollah members have been killed, according to Israeli figures.
The military also reported striking 300 Hezbollah infrastructure sites, including weapons depots and command centers. While displaced residents have begun returning to damaged cities like Nabatieh, Israel reiterated its commitment to "remove any threat" to its civilians and troops, signaling potential volatility ahead.
