Environmental authorities in Kazakhstan are investigating the deaths of 191 Caspian seals discovered along the Mangystau region coastline this week, marking the first major marine mortality event of 2026 for the endangered species.
Regional fisheries official Konarbay Bazarbayev confirmed the carcasses appeared along a 50-km coastal stretch following persistent northwestern winds. “Preliminary analysis suggests these seals died over a month ago,” Bazarbayev stated, noting that biological samples have been sent to the Kazakh Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology for testing.
Scientists hypothesize the deaths could stem from weakened immune systems in the population, potentially linked to environmental stressors in the Caspian Sea ecosystem. This incident follows a larger mortality event in 2025 when 2,212 seal deaths were recorded along Kazakhstan’s coast.
The Caspian seal population has declined by over 70% in the past century due to industrial pollution, habitat loss, and disease. With fewer than 70,000 adults remaining, conservation groups are urging expanded regional cooperation among Caspian littoral states to address ecological challenges.
