UN Boosts Middle East Aid Amid Lebanon, Gaza Crises

The United Nations has intensified humanitarian operations across the Middle East as ongoing hostilities in Lebanon and Gaza strain critical infrastructure and displace millions, according to updates from UN agencies this week.

Iran Grapples With Post-Ceasefire Challenges

Over 2,360 deaths, including 477 children and women, were recorded in Iran between February 28 and April 8 during Israeli-U.S. military operations, according to Tehran authorities. A fragile ceasefire implemented earlier this month has allowed limited relief efforts, but widespread damage to homes, hospitals, and energy systems continues to hinder recovery. A $12 million UN emergency fund allocation aims to support trauma care and essential services through local partners.

Lebanon’s Displacement Crisis Worsens

Israeli strikes have displaced 1.2 million people in Lebanon since March 2, with over 2,100 killed and 6,900 injured. Daily attacks on southern villages have destroyed residential areas, while clashes in Bint Jbeil district restrict aid access. UN agencies report providing psychosocial support to 90,000 displaced people, prioritizing children and families facing repeated displacement.

Gaza’s Aid Operations Near Collapse

Critical UNRWA electrical generators in Gaza risk mechanical failure due to blocked spare part shipments, which Israeli authorities classify as dual-use items. Despite obstacles, nutrition programs screened 72,000 children for malnutrition in March, while protection services reached 4,700 children with counseling this month. “These parts are vital to keep facilities running,” stated UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq during tense negotiations with Israeli officials.

UN humanitarian coordinator OCHA reiterated calls for immediate de-escalation, civilian protection, and increased funding across all crisis zones.
