Nepal Records 496 Natural Disaster Deaths in Past Year

Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported on Monday that 496 people died in natural disasters between April 14, 2025, and April 13, 2026. Landslides accounted for 58% of fatalities, followed by floods and extreme weather events, highlighting the Himalayan nation's vulnerability to climate-related hazards.

Officials noted a 12% increase in disaster-related casualties compared to the previous annual cycle, with monsoon-triggered disasters causing widespread infrastructure damage. Over 15,000 families were displaced, particularly in rural areas of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

The government has accelerated implementation of its National Disaster Risk Reduction Policy 2026, prioritizing early warning systems and community resilience programs. International partners including the Asian Development Bank recently pledged $120 million for landslide mitigation projects.

As climate scientists predict intensified monsoon patterns this year, authorities urge residents in high-risk zones to participate in evacuation drills scheduled before the rainy season begins in June.
