China Urges Restraint Amid Iran Tensions at UNSC Meeting

China emphasized the need for peaceful dialogue to address escalating tensions in Iran during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on January 15, 2026. Sun Lei, Chargé d'Affaires of China's Permanent Mission to the UN, urged all parties to 'exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could worsen the situation.'

Speaking at the emergency session, Sun reiterated China's stance that 'Iran's affairs must be independently decided by its own people,' while calling on external actors to respect the UN Charter's principles of sovereignty and non-interference. He specifically urged the U.S. to 'abandon its fixation on the use of force' and prioritize diplomatic solutions.

The remarks come as global attention focuses on regional stability in West Asia, with analysts noting China's consistent advocacy for multilateral conflict resolution. Observers suggest this position aligns with Beijing's broader foreign policy framework emphasizing non-intervention and cooperative security.
