Shennongjia Designated as World Tourism Mountain for Sustainable Travel

In a significant recognition of its ecological value and tourism potential, Shennongjia, a UNESCO-protected site located in the Chinese mainland, was officially designated as a "World Tourism Mountain" this past Friday, May 29. The announcement took place during the opening ceremony of International Mountain Tourism Day held in Hubei Province.

The honor was bestowed by the International Mountain Tourism Alliance (IMTA). Shennongjia is one of two peaks from the Chinese mainland to join this elite global circle this year, alongside the renowned Wuyi Mountain in Fujian Province. This designation underscores the growing international recognition of the region's unique landscapes and commitment to preservation.

What sets Shennongjia apart on the global stage is its prestigious UNESCO "Triple Crown." It is the first site in the Chinese mainland to be simultaneously recognized as a World Biosphere Reserve, a Global Geopark, and a World Heritage Site. This rare combination of titles highlights the area's exceptional biodiversity and geological significance.

For global travelers and environmental researchers, the new status of Shennongjia serves as more than just a title; it establishes a global benchmark for integrating strict biodiversity conservation with sustainable green tourism. By balancing the needs of visitors with the imperative to protect fragile ecosystems, Shennongjia is leading the way toward a more sustainable model of nature-based tourism in Asia.
