In a surprising turn of events during the opening of the FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League (VNL) leg in Nanjing, the Czech Republic achieved a historic milestone by defeating China for the first time in international competition.
The match, which took place this past Wednesday, saw the Czech Republic claim a decisive victory with set scores of 25-20, 25-20, and 26-24. Prior to this encounter, China had maintained a dominant record, winning all six of their previous meetings against the Czech side.
Entering a new Olympic cycle, the Chinese team fielded a reshaped roster featuring several young talents. A highlight of the match was the senior national team debut of middle blocker Guo Zhongnan, who stepped into the starting lineup on her 17th birthday and contributed seven points to the team's effort.
Despite the loss, several Chinese players showed strong individual performances. Tang Xin led the scoring for the hosts with 18 points, supported by Wang Aoqian with 10 points and Dong Yuhan with nine. On the opposite side of the net, Czech captain Michaela Mlejnkova spearheaded the victory with 18 points, while Gabriela Brancuska added another 17.
The match reached a dramatic climax in the third set. After dropping the first two sets, China mounted a spirited comeback. Crucial points from Dong Yuhan and captain Gong Xiangyu helped the hosts level the score at 23-23. In a tense final sequence, Tang Xin managed to save a match point to tie the game at 24-24, but the Czech Republic remained composed, capturing the next two points to seal their historic win.
