The global sporting community is mourning the loss of Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, the President of the Confederation of African Athletics, who passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at the age of 75.
The announcement was made by Cameroon's Defense Minister, Joseph Beti Assomo, who confirmed that Malboum's death followed a period of illness.
A towering figure in sports administration, Malboum held several prestigious leadership positions simultaneously at the time of his passing. Beyond his role with the Confederation of African Athletics, he served as the president of the International Military Sports Council, the Cameroon National Olympic and Sports Committee, and the Association of African Olympic Sports Confederations. His influence extended globally through his role as a council member of World Athletics.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe shared a personal reflection on their long-standing relationship, dating back to the 2007 World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa. "Determination, kindness, excellence and the quiet strength, focus and discipline he has brought to all aspects of his life is how I will remember him best," Coe remarked.
Similarly, Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei praised Malboum's contributions to the continent's sporting infrastructure. Having served alongside him as CAA Vice President and as a colleague on the World Athletics Council, Tuwei described Malboum as a visionary leader whose humility and tireless efforts were instrumental in championing African athletics.
Malboum's legacy remains woven into the fabric of African sports, remembered not only for his administrative prowess but for his unwavering dedication to the growth and empowerment of athletes across the continent.
