Sanya Kicks Off Asian Beach Games With Tech-Infused Opening Ceremony

The 2026 Asian Beach Games launched in Sanya on April 23 with a groundbreaking opening ceremony that blended cutting-edge technology, coastal aesthetics, and Hainan's cultural heritage. Artistic director Chen Weiya revealed the event's focus on innovation, featuring high-tech robots as ceremonial guides and a condensed 18-minute artistic performance showcasing the island's traditions and its role as a global hub.

"This ceremony is a celebration of Sanya's identity," Chen told Sports Scene. "We've integrated Hainan's folk culture, the spirit of the Hainan Free Trade Port, and the natural beauty of our beaches into every moment." The production marks a shift toward streamlined events, contrasting with longer formats like the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

With delegations from 45 Olympic Council of Asia members participating, the Games will award 62 gold medals across 14 sports through April 30. The opening spectacle, set against the South China Sea, emphasized efficiency while leveraging augmented reality and synchronized drone displays to highlight regional themes.

Chen emphasized the ceremony's dual purpose: "It’s not just about sports—it’s about presenting Sanya as a sunny, cosmopolitan destination where tradition meets tomorrow."
