Cairo Leads Push for Global Roadmap to Resolve Sudan Crisis

Egypt hosted high-stakes diplomatic talks this week as international powers sought to chart a path toward ending Sudan's protracted conflict, now entering its third year. The fifth consultative meeting of the Sudan International Group brought together representatives from the African Union, Arab League, UN, EU, and IGAD to address what UN envoy Ramtane Lamamra called "one of Africa's most pressing humanitarian challenges."

Participants reached consensus on three critical priorities: immediate cessation of hostilities, guaranteed humanitarian access, and preservation of Sudan's territorial integrity. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi reinforced Cairo's position during talks with US Senior Advisor Massad Boulos, stating Egypt "will not hesitate" to protect Sudanese stability through "all required measures."

The meetings come amid heightened regional tensions, with Saudi Arabia recently accusing the UAE of arming Sudan's Rapid Support Forces – claims Abu Dhabi denies. Political analyst Sara El Shalakany noted: "Egypt perceives Sudan's instability as an existential threat, given shared water resources, border security concerns, and vital Red Sea trade routes."

While details of the proposed roadmap remain confidential, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty confirmed Washington's backing for Cairo-led mediation efforts following trilateral discussions with Saudi and American counterparts. The Arab League's 18-month consultative process aims to complement ongoing African Union peace initiatives, though fighting continues in Darfur and Khartoum outskirts.
