Sanchez’s China Visit Spurs Hopes for Stronger EU-Asia Ties

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is currently concluding a five-day official visit to China, his fourth trip to the country since 2023, with meetings focused on deepening bilateral cooperation. The visit, which began on April 11 and concludes April 15, comes as Spain seeks to expand its role as a bridge between European and Asian markets.

In Madrid, residents expressed optimism about the diplomatic engagement. Camilo, a university student interviewed by CGTN, highlighted the growing cultural intersections: "Chinese New Year celebrations are now part of our local festivals in many Spanish cities. This visit could formalize more exchanges in education and tourism."

Trade remains a central focus, with Spain importing over €42 billion in Chinese goods annually. Camilo specifically noted potential in electric vehicle collaboration: "Spanish automakers could benefit from China’s battery tech advancements while offering design expertise." Analysts suggest this visit may pave the way for new green energy partnerships ahead of the EU-China summit later this year.
