The 16th Beijing International Film Festival, currently underway with a record 1,826 entries from 139 countries and regions, has spotlighted cinema’s power to transcend cultural barriers. Oscar-winning Dutch director Mike van Diem and Malaysian filmmaker Woo Ming Jin shared insights on storytelling’s universal language during exclusive discussions at the event.
Van Diem, nominated for his morally complex drama The Girls, emphasized how films challenge audiences to “rethink personal boundaries.” Meanwhile, Woo’s The Fox King, a Malay-language coming-of-age tale set in coastal Malaysia, demonstrates how regional narratives resonate across Asia through shared themes of family and growth.
With 16 films competing for the Tiantan Award, festival jury president Juliette Binoche highlighted cinema’s unique capacity to build “legendary bridges of friendship.” The festival continues through April 30, serving as a critical platform for cross-cultural dialogue in Asia’s rapidly evolving film industry.
