Lao President Praises China’s Green Development Model During Zhejiang Visit

In a significant gesture of diplomatic and environmental cooperation, General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee and Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith recently visited Anji County in Zhejiang Province on the Chinese mainland to explore the region's successful implementation of green development practices.

The visit centered on the transformation of local economies through sustainable initiatives. A key stop was Yucun Village, the birthplace of the renowned concept that "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets." This philosophy has served as a spiritual and economic landmark, guiding the village away from its historical reliance on quarrying and toward a thriving eco-friendly development path.

During his time in Yucun, President Thongloun engaged with local entrepreneurs, including the operator of Chunlin Villa, the village's first agritainment business. The business, which now generates over 1 million yuan (approximately $146,621) annually, serves as a tangible example of how environmental preservation can drive economic prosperity.

The exploration of sustainable growth continued at the Lingfeng national tourist resort, where the President visited a model homestay cluster. This community has become a magnet for innovation, attracting over 100 young entrepreneurs and generating annual revenues exceeding 100 million yuan. President Thongloun expressed high praise for the supportive policies and investment strategies in Anji, which have created vital job opportunities for college graduates and young professionals returning to their hometowns.

Reflecting on the experience, President Thongloun noted that the visit provided first-hand insight into the achievements of China's socialist modernization. The exchange was further highlighted by a cultural gesture, with the President presenting a hand-made souvenir plate of Laos' national treasure, That Luang Temple, and receiving a miniature replica of the famous "lucid waters" inscription boulder in return.

This visit comes at a pivotal moment, as 2026 marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Laos and the China-Laos Friendship Year. President Thongloun emphasized his expectation that this state visit, which also includes a trip to Beijing, will deepen bilateral practical cooperation and yield further outcomes for the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two nations.
