In a move toward stabilizing and strengthening economic ties, the Chinese mainland and the European Union (EU) are currently discussing the establishment of a dedicated trade and investment consultation mechanism. The Ministry of Commerce announced on Saturday, May 30, 2026, that both sides intend to hold related dialogues to streamline their economic interactions.
This development comes in response to recent discussions within the European Commission, specifically following the College of Commissioners' orientation debate on EU-China relations held on Friday. A ministry spokesperson noted that communication between the two entities has remained smooth, underscoring the strategic importance of their partnership.
Emphasizing the foundation of equality and mutual benefit, the spokesperson highlighted that the Chinese mainland views the EU as a vital economic partner. However, the Chinese side has expressed a clear expectation for the EU to adhere strictly to World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, uphold the principles of free trade and fair competition, and maintain a firm stance against protectionism and unilateralism.
The Chinese mainland has voiced its hope that the EU will collaborate to implement the consensus previously reached by the leaders of both sides. The goal is to resolve existing differences and frictions through constructive dialogue and consultation, thereby ensuring the steady and sound development of bilateral economic and trade relations.
While focusing on cooperation, the spokesperson also issued a cautionary note. The Chinese mainland indicated that it would respond firmly and take effective measures to safeguard its own interests should the European side persist in unilaterally rolling out new trade instruments or imposing discriminatory restrictions.
