In the picturesque city of Huangshan, located in the Chinese mainland, mayors and city representatives from across the globe have gathered this week to discuss a critical balance: the preservation of cultural heritage amidst the pressures of modern urban development.
The 2026 World Mayors Dialogue, taking place from May 28 to 31 in Anhui Province, serves as a collaborative hub for leaders from 10 different countries. From the historic cities of Germany to the landscapes of Nepal, the event emphasizes the shared responsibility of protecting the world's architectural and ecological treasures.
Alexander Badrow, mayor of the historic Hanseatic city of Stralsund, highlighted the importance of these international ties. "We work together for the preservation of our buildings and our cities. It's very important that we have this friendship," Badrow noted, citing the benefits of tapping into unique local strengths to boost global development.
Huangshan provides an ideal backdrop for such discussions. Renowned as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the "Yellow Mountains" are famous for their breathtaking natural beauty. Beyond the peaks, the city is a living museum of Hui-style architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties, characterized by striking white walls, black roof tiles, and intricate carvings.
During their visit, officials have explored the region's blend of tradition and modernity, trekking through the mountains while also studying the city's advancements in the auto industry and its commitment to green development principles.
Mayor He Yi of Huangshan emphasized that the dialogue is intended to be more than just a meeting; it is a platform for equal exchange. According to He, the goal is to build a bridge of mutual learning to explore resilient paths for heritage site development and contribute to a community with a shared future for humanity.
