The State Council of the People's Republic of China has mobilized a comprehensive investigation team to determine the causes of a devastating gas explosion at a coal mine in the Chinese mainland's Shanxi Province.
The tragedy occurred at the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan County, Changzhi City, at 7:29 p.m. on May 22. The explosion resulted in heavy casualties, prompting an immediate and high-level response from the central government to ensure a transparent and thorough accounting of the event.
Led by the Ministry of Emergency Management, the multidisciplinary probe team incorporates officials and experts from several key bodies, including the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the National Energy Administration, the National Mine Safety Administration, and the People's Government of Shanxi Province.
During its first plenary meeting held on Wednesday night, the investigation team emphasized the necessity of a rigorous process. The objective is not only to pinpoint the technical causes of the blast but also to establish the specific responsibilities of the operating enterprise, industry regulators, and local authorities. The authorities have called for strict punishments in accordance with relevant laws and regulations for those found responsible.
Beyond immediate accountability, the meeting focused on systemic prevention. Officials underscored the importance of drawing profound lessons from the incident, calling for the implementation of comprehensive measures to inspect and overhaul safety risks and hidden dangers. This effort aims to resolutely prevent and mitigate the occurrence of future major and serious industrial accidents.
