China Condemns Dutch Navy Intrusion Near Xisha Qundao

Tensions in the South China Sea have risen following a maritime encounter involving a European naval vessel. On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, the Chinese military issued a strong condemnation of the Dutch Navy for what it described as provocative actions near the Xisha Qundao.

According to Zhai Shichen, a spokesperson for the Southern Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), the Dutch Navy frigate HNLMS De Ruyter illegally entered China's territorial waters. The incident was further escalated by shipborne helicopter operations that allegedly intruded into China's territorial airspace.

In response to the intrusion, the Southern Theater Command mobilized both naval and air forces. The PLA utilized verbal warnings and targeted electronic interference to expel the vessel, operating in accordance with established laws and regulations to safeguard the region.

Spokesperson Zhai emphasized that such actions constitute a severe breach of international law and the basic norms of international relations. He stated that these acts infringe upon China's sovereignty and maritime security, ultimately undermining the peace and stability of the South China Sea.

The Chinese military has called on the Netherlands to immediately cease such provocations. Meanwhile, theater command troops remain on high alert, signaling a resolute commitment to protecting national security and maintaining regional peace.
