The Chinese government has launched an urgent response in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality after devastating heavy rainfall triggered floods this past weekend, resulting in casualties and significant infrastructure damage.
According to local authorities, torrential rains began lashing the region on Saturday night, May 23, 2026, causing severe flooding in several districts. The impact was most acute in the Yongchuan District, where three people have been confirmed dead and 17 others remain unaccounted for. Additionally, two people are reported missing in the Beibei District after similar rainfall patterns struck the area.
In a swift move to coordinate disaster management, the office of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters dispatched a specialized work team to Chongqing on Sunday, May 24. The Ministry of Emergency Management stated that the team's primary mission is to guide flood control measures and streamline disaster relief efforts to ensure the safety of residents and the efficiency of rescue operations.
To support the immediate recovery process, the National Development and Reform Commission announced on Sunday the allocation of 20 million yuan (approximately $2.94 million) from the central budget. These funds are specifically earmarked for disaster recovery, the restoration of critical infrastructure, and the revitalization of public services within the municipality.
Rescue and response operations are currently underway as teams work tirelessly to locate the missing and stabilize affected areas. This rapid mobilization underscores the priority placed on public safety and regional stability in the face of extreme weather events.
