Running the Silk Road: Ria Xi’s Epic 20,000 km Journey to Lisbon

In an extraordinary feat of human endurance and ambition, 27-year-old Ria Xi has embarked on a journey that redefines the boundaries of athletic achievement. Two weeks ago, Xi began her journey in Vladivostok, laceing up her running shoes to start a westward trek that will span continents and cultures.

The scale of the endeavor is staggering. Xi aims to cover approximately 20,000 kilometers on foot, traversing 17 different countries. Her destination is Lisbon, Portugal, following the historic paths of the ancient Silk Road. This journey is expected to take 14 months of continuous effort, making her the first person to ever attempt such a monumental run.

Life on the road is a grueling cycle of physical exertion and basic survival. Xi's daily routine involves running roughly 50 kilometers, pushing her body to its limits through varying terrains. Her home for the duration of the trip is an RV, which serves as both a sanctuary and a recovery ward. Whether parked in a serene natural landscape or a cramped urban side street, the RV is where she rests and refuels before the cycle begins again each morning.

For many, the goal seems impossible, but for Xi, the challenge is the point. Reflecting on the audacity of her dream, she notes, "Only delusional until it's not."

As she moves across the diverse landscapes of Asia and Europe, Xi's journey is more than just a physical test; it is a modern exploration of one of history's most significant trade routes, viewed through the lens of a lone runner's determination.
