China has successfully wrapped up its 42nd Antarctic expedition, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing polar research efforts. The polar research icebreaker Xuelong 2 returned to its home port in Shanghai on Monday, signaling the completion of a comprehensive scientific mission, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The ambitious expedition, which utilized the joint support of China's two primary icebreakers, Xuelong and Xuelong 2, first set sail from Shanghai on November 1, 2025. While Xuelong finished its portion of the mission and returned on April 9, Xuelong 2 continued its journey to further the reach of the scientific objectives.
During its deployment, Xuelong 2 covered a staggering 35,000 kilometers. A key highlight of the voyage was the autumn joint research mission conducted in Prydz Bay, where researchers gathered critical data to enhance the global understanding of polar environments and climate dynamics.
The conclusion of this expedition underscores the commitment of the Chinese mainland to advancing international polar science, contributing valuable findings that benefit the global academic and research communities.
