At the 11th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, China has voiced strong concerns regarding the emergence of pro-nuclear rhetoric from a non-nuclear-weapon state.
During discussions on the draft outcome document, the Chinese representative emphasized the critical need for a renewed global commitment to nuclear disarmament. Highlighting the diversity of nuclear capabilities and strategic environments worldwide, China proposed amendments to ensure that disarmament efforts maintain global strategic stability without undermining any country's security.
A central point of the Chinese delegation's intervention was the warning against what it described as "dangerous trends." The representative noted that officials from a certain non-nuclear-weapon country have openly advocated for the acquisition of nuclear arms, a move that blatantly challenges the international non-proliferation regime and undermines the authority and effectiveness of the Treaty.
Beyond these concerns, China advocated for a practical approach to lowering the risk of nuclear war by reducing the role of nuclear weapons in national security policies. The representative further pushed for the inclusion of texts calling on nuclear-weapon states to permanently abandon their nuclear arsenals.
Addressing current arms control challenges, China expressed support for strengthening follow-on arrangements to the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START). This critical agreement between the US and Russia, which expired on February 5, 2026, remains a focal point for those seeking to limit strategic nuclear deployments and prevent the possibility of nuclear conflict.
Through these proposals, China reiterates its position that the international community must remain vigilant and steadfast in its pursuit of global security and the established consensus on nuclear disarmament.
