In a recent address to the United Nations Security Council, China has urged for the swift achievement of political stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), highlighting the critical need for cohesion amidst ongoing volatility.
Sun Lei, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, noted that persistent disputes between various ethnic groups and political parties have significantly hindered the country's internal stability and its broader economic development agenda. With the country preparing for general elections this year, Sun emphasized that the outcome will likely determine the trajectory of both BiH and the wider Balkan region for the foreseeable future.
China has expressed hope that the country's two political entities, three constituent peoples, and all political parties will exercise calm and restraint. By fostering mutual tolerance and a stable political atmosphere, the envoy stated, the country can ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the upcoming polls.
The call for stability comes at a time when BiH is facing several systemic challenges. Over the past few years, political unrest has coincided with slow economic growth, escalating inflation, and significant labor outflow. Sun called on all parties to prioritize the collective interests of the population and create a favorable environment for rapid economic recovery, ensuring citizens can lead secure and happy lives.
Furthermore, China is calling for enhanced international support to help BiH expand investment cooperation, particularly in sectors that secure livelihoods and advance the sustainable development agenda.
Reaffirming China's long-standing position, Sun Lei stated that China respects the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the independent choice of its people regarding their future. China remains committed to developing friendly relations with all ethnic groups and supporting the ethnic reconciliation process to maintain peace and tranquility across the region.
