China is taking another significant step forward in its space exploration journey. The upcoming Tianzhou-10 cargo mission is set to complete a full upgrade of the spacesuits used on the Tiangong space station, ensuring that astronauts have the most advanced gear for extravehicular activities.
Completing the Suit Upgrade
According to the China Media Group, the Tianzhou-10 mission will deliver a third new-generation spacesuit. This suit is identical to the two previously delivered by the Tianzhou-9 mission. Once it arrives, the space station's spacesuit system will be fully replaced, enhancing the safety and efficiency of astronauts performing tasks outside the station.
A Heavy Lift for Science and Logistics
The mission is not just about apparel. The Tianzhou-10 spacecraft, launched by a Long March-7 Y11 rocket, will carry nearly 6.3 tonnes of supplies. This massive shipment includes over 220 items essential for astronaut support, space station operations, and cargo systems, along with approximately 700 kilograms of propellant.
In a boost for scientific research, the mission will also transport a new space treadmill and six scientific experiment payloads. These experiments, weighing about 280 kilograms, will focus on advanced space technologies and fluid physics under microgravity. This represents the largest number of uplink payload projects carried by a Tianzhou mission since the station's construction phase began.
Precision Planning and Execution
Preparation is in the final stages. The rocket-spacecraft combination has already undergone vertical transportation to the launch site in south China's Hainan Province. While most cargo is already loaded, temperature-sensitive items—such as fresh produce and biological samples—will be added shortly before launch to maintain their integrity.
Following the arrival at the launch pad, the system will undergo about three days of rigorous testing, including airtightness checks and tower coordination, to ensure a flawless ascent.
Clearing the Path
The stage has been set following the successful departure of Tianzhou-9, which undocked from the Tiangong space station on Wednesday and re-entered the atmosphere on Thursday. With the docking port now clear, the Shenzhou-21 crew has already been conducting manual rendezvous and docking training to welcome the newest cargo arrival.
