China’s May Day Box Office Hits 758 Million Yuan as Ticket Sales Surge

The May Day holiday in the Chinese mainland concluded on a high note, with the cinema industry reporting a significant uptick in attendance. According to the latest data from the China Film Administration, the box office reached 758 million yuan (approximately $111 million) over the five-day break that ended this past Tuesday.

The holiday period saw a notable surge in cinema-goers, with the number of tickets sold rising by 10.23% year-on-year to reach 20.8419 million. This increase in volume was supported by a slight expansion in availability, as the number of screenings grew by 2% to 2.376 million. Interestingly, the growth in attendance was accompanied by a decrease in costs for consumers; the average ticket price fell by 8% compared to the previous year, settling at 36.3 yuan.

Variety was a key driver for the holiday crowd. The crime thriller Vanishing Point emerged as the clear favorite, commanding more than one-third of the total revenue. Other top performers included the action-packed Cold War 1994, set in Hong Kong, and the highly anticipated The Devil Wears Prada 2 from 20th Century Studios.

Domestic cinema also shone, with Chen Sicheng's comedy Being Towards Death and the emotional family drama Dear You rounding out the list of the most popular films. This blend of domestic hits and international titles underscores the diverse tastes of audiences across the Chinese mainland and the continued resilience of the theatrical experience.
